In a world government’s latest move against anime and manga, the French government has started restricting access to the popular Nhentai hentai outlet, with a new government redirect page warning that the various doujins and galleries of images hosted on the site contain “images of child porn”.

News of the ban was first reported on November 19.e, when several French citizens took to social media to report that their attempts to access the page were denied, instead resulting in a forced redirect to a newly created government landing page.

One of the alerts, if not the first, regarding this development was issued by Reddit user / u / Kodoxd, who informed his fellow subreddit / r / nhentai subscribers that “”Nhentai is now down in France. I guess I have to buy a VPN.

Nhentai has just been banned in France,” lamented @DaBi_Crma. “I am going to end my life.

The artist @Saurei_ also announced to his subscribers that “Nhentai is no longer available in France”.

“Mom, hell,” they exclaimed. “How am I supposed to shit?”

According to the warning, users were “redirected to this page by the Home Office because you attempted to connect to a site containing child pornography images,” an act that was done in order to “protect the dignity of the child. the person victims of abuse seen in the images “and” protect Internet users and especially the very young, who did not want to find these shocking images “.

The French government also noted that access to the site was restricted “so that the person who tries to view these images can become aware of the seriousness of his attraction”, in order to “fight against the sites which produce these images”.

Although there have been sporadic reports that some French users could still access the site, they are rare, being overwhelmingly overwhelmed by those who find their own efforts unsuccessful.

This ban was ostensibly made by virtue of the powers conferred by Decree n ° 2015-125, a decree whose adoption gave the French authorities the possibility of blocking any site, at any time, if it is suspected of being used to facilitate terrorist activities or disseminate child pornography.

None of the galleries hosted on Nhentai should contain images of real world individuals, adults or otherwise, as the site deals exclusively with illustrated content, primarily of Japanese origin.

Notably, this is not the first time that the French government has taken censorship action against Nhentai, as the hentai mainstay was blocked in the country for a short time in 2017, with the official Twitter account first finding out in March that the site was “now blocked in France and has been removed from German Google search results,” and reported later in September that the site had been unblocked.

This is the Western government’s second major action against Japanese adult media, as France appears to be slowly following in Australia’s footsteps, which purely and simply prohibited importing hentai and other adult anime products into the country earlier this year.

What do you think of the action of the French government? Do you think this is a one-time incident, or will it be the start of a larger campaign of government censorship? Let us know your thoughts on social media or in the comments below!
