MURPHYSBORO (WSIL) – A moment that animal shelters and guardians have been waiting for a long time finally happened last Friday. Illinois takes a step towards ending puppy mills.

Governor JB Pritzker on Friday signed a new bill that will help puppy mills become a thing of the past.

“A puppy mill is primarily an unlicensed facility and only breeds dogs. There are also cat versions and they breed for profit, ”says Kay Creese, executive director and veterinarian of St. Francis CARE animal shelter.

House Bill 1711 prohibits the sale of puppy mill puppies in pet stores. “They are often hard to find because they are unlicensed entities. Their source of income has always been selling to pet stores and so this bill cuts that supply line,” adds Creese.

Illinois is now the fifth state in the United States to ban puppy mills, which its supporters say is a step towards animal welfare. “We have all seen the photos of the horrible conditions these dogs are kept in. They are never allowed on the grass. They are on wires so their stools fall out so they don’t have to be cleaned. need to groom aren’t usually groomed and they’re so matted. Then often when they’re done breeding, they drop them, ”says Creese.

Creese says abused animals often end up in shelters. “We get them and I think everyone does or has over time and they usually don’t get socialized. I mean you put them on concrete and they don’t know how to walk on them, the grass is just terrifying. They need a lot of cleaning work before they can even get basic medical care for them. “

Creese says she is relieved that the bill has been signed and that it is a big step in the right direction. “This is good news because it really ends a whole segment of abuse.”

Pet stores will be able to sell cats and dogs from animal control and rescues. The law comes into force on February 24, 2022.

Pet owners have been warned to remain vigilant as weather conditions in the coming days are expected to create an ideal breeding ground for fleas.

It is common knowledge that pests thrive in hot weather and humid conditions are also perfect for insects.

Karen Heskin, Head of Pets at Pets at Home Group, said, “Fleas can be a nuisance to pets and owners. They can cause irritation and the flea life cycle can cause our cats and dogs to contract tapeworms. We recommend that you check regularly for fleas, especially if your pet goes outside.

“But the good news is that fleas can be easily controlled, although it’s best to act quickly to limit the impact on your pet and your home.”

With warm temperatures and rain showers forecast for much of the UK, experts at Pets at Home Group have shared tips to help protect pets:

Know how to verify

It’s a good idea to get into the habit of checking your pet for fleas regularly to make sure there aren’t any. You should take a close look at your pet’s fur and keep a very close eye on the armpits, groin, back of the neck, and the base of the tail, as these are popular flea hiding places.

Dead fleas stuck on a dog’s fur

Watch out for changes in behavior

Fleas can cause your pet a lot of discomfort and embarrassment, so if you notice certain changes in their behavior, these pesky parasites just might be to blame. Scratching or biting, excessive grooming, red patches of skin, and hair loss can all be symptoms of having fleas. If your pet exhibits any of these signs, see a veterinarian.

It’s not just cats and dogs

Fleas don’t just affect cats and dogs. In fact, they can become a problem for most furry animals, such as rabbits. Remember, never use a dog flea treatment on a cat. Some ingredients in dog products can be toxic to cats. Please seek advice from a veterinarian or animal care specialist.

Treat your home as well as your pet

Flea larvae hatch from eggs that can live anywhere in the house – from an animal’s bedding to rugs and upholstery.

Warming your pet’s bedding and cleaning cushions, sofas, and rugs where your dog or cat likes to relax will help kill any flea eggs and larvae that might be there. You should also replace your vacuum cleaner dust bag or filter, as fleas can survive inside.

Set regular reminders to stay on top of treatments

Preventing a flea infestation is much easier than curing one, and the best way to protect your pet from fleas is to have a regular treatment routine in place. While fleas thrive in hot, humid weather, they live year round.

Treatments are generally hassle-free as they come in the form of a “one-time” product that is quick and easy to administer. Regular check-ups with a veterinarian will help make sure your pet is happy and healthy.

While fleas thrive in hot, humid weather, they live year round. It’s worth setting a monthly reminder on your phone to treat your pet with flea preventative treatment, or consider a subscription service to get flea treatments delivered right to your door.

Like many countries, China is concerned about the risk of terrorism from a Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. Beijing has repeatedly told the Taliban that the country cannot become fertile ground for militants to launch attacks in Xinjiang, just as Osama bin Laden used it as a base to prepare for his 9/11 attacks on the United States. United.

A closer threat could be the spillover of activism into Pakistan and Central Asia, where China has invested heavily and sought to forge alliances.

“The Afghan Taliban have promised that they will separate themselves from the international terrorist forces, but we still haven’t seen how they will because they are not officially in power,” said Li Wei, an international security expert at the China Institute retirement. contemporary international relations.

The Taliban could be an incongruous partner for China because their religion-based philosophy is diametrically opposed to Beijing’s vision of an atheist regime under the Communist Party that places social stability and economic development above all else. That hasn’t stopped China’s ultimately pragmatic leaders from reaching out to them, however.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted a delegation led by Taliban political leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar late last month and emphasized China’s hopes for stability and an end to violence and terrorist threats.

Chinese officials and state media have criticized what they call the US “hasty” withdrawal from Afghanistan. “Swift Taliban Victory Embarrasses America, Shatters Image, Arrogance,” read the headline in the state newspaper Global Times.

Despite the rhetoric, Wang told US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that China was prepared to work with the United States to promote a “soft landing” on the Afghan issue.

However, he added that “the United States cannot, on the one hand, deliberately slow down and suppress China to undermine China’s legitimate rights and interests, and on the other hand, rely on China to offer its support and coordination ”.

President Joe Biden has said leaving Afghanistan will prepare America to face larger potential threats, especially from China.

“Our real strategic competitors – China and Russia – would like nothing more than the United States to continue to channel billions of dollars, resources and attention to stabilize Afghanistan indefinitely,” he said. he said this week.

Yin Gang, a researcher in Middle Eastern studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said the two countries share a common interest in a stable Afghanistan.

“If Afghanistan achieves stability, the United States will look good and China will be invited to participate in the reconstruction,” Yin said.

China has sued commercial ventures in Afghanistan, but the prospects for such projects do not seem any closer now than they were in the past 20 years of US presence.

A consortium led by China Metallurgical Group Corp. offered $ 3 billion to develop one of the world’s largest copper deposits at Mes Aynak, also promising to build a power plant, railroad and other infrastructure. Years later, work has yet to begin, largely due to insurgent activity in the surrounding province of Logar.

Chinese state-owned National Petroleum Corp. has suspended oil drilling in the Amu-Darya basin due to a delay in signing a transit agreement with Uzbekistan to allow the transport of crude oil to China. The Afghan government subsequently canceled the drilling agreement.

China has invested heavily in Pakistan, which borders Afghanistan, hoping to expand its Belt and Road initiative to expand China’s reach abroad by improving trade routes, but the Afghanistan seems far from ready to act as a link in this chain.

China’s vast economic interests in Pakistan and Central Asia could clearly be affected by any terrorist resurgence in Afghanistan, said Henry Storey, political risk analyst based in Melbourne, Australia,

“At the same time, China is reluctant to get involved in any presence on the ground because it does not want to repeat the mistakes of the United States – or be distracted from more pressing issues like Taiwan,” Storey said, saying reference to the island that China claims as its own and threatens to invade.

Chinese academics have echoed the government’s line that China will not get involved in Afghanistan’s internal affairs no matter how the situation develops. In a briefing this week, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said China will provide assistance to Afghanistan within its means.

While the “hawkish” Chinese state media described the events in Afghanistan as a victory for Beijing and a loss for Washington, it reflects “a false sense of confidence,” said Meia Nouwens, China expert at the International Institute. strategic studies.

China might not be as interested in exploiting the US withdrawal as an opportunity to engage economically with Afghanistan as some have suggested, she said, noting that Beijing was slowing its foreign investment in infrastructure.

The question of how to protect the safety of Chinese investments and personnel also looms large.

“For now … Beijing will do the same as most other countries,” she said. “Wait and see how things develop in Afghanistan.”

MONT RAINIER, MD., August 10, 2021 / PRNewswire-PRWeb / – Alley Cat Rescue, Inc.’s Feral Fix Challenge continues through the end of 2021 and vets / clinics can still register to participate. The Feral Fix Challenge is an annual global event that brings together vets and communities to save cats’ lives. The Challenge invites vets to get involved in the sterilization-return (TNR) trap by providing low cost or free sterilization / sterilization and rabies vaccination for stray cats. Now in its eleventh year, the one-year challenge has spayed or neutered over 130,000 cats by over 1,500 veterinary participants. Veterinarians from all of the following countries participated in the campaign: United States, Canada, South Africa, Namibia, Greece, Israel, Japan, Croatia, Antigua, Nicaragua, India, United Arab Emirates

An estimated 860,000 cats are euthanized in U.S. shelters each year, many of which are newborn kittens or non-socialized stray cats. The two go hand in hand, as 80% of kittens entering shelters each year are born to stray cats. Both groups often require a significant investment of time and resources beyond the capacity of a shelter before they are adoptable. The influx of kittens during the spring and summer months, also known as the kitten season, extends shelters to the point of failure, leading to the euthanasia of healthy cats and kittens simply for make room for newcomers every day.

“It is a tragedy that 2,500 cats and kittens are killed every day in our shelters, places that are meant to serve as a temporary sanctuary and refuge for cats in need,” said Louise Holton, president and founder of Alley Cat Rescue. “The best way to reduce the number of kittens flocking to shelters is to sterilize and neuter free range outdoor cats. When the breeding cycle is stopped, unwanted kittens are never born and the adult cat enjoys health benefits as well. Targeted NRT programs have been shown to significantly reduce rates of admission to shelters and euthanasia.

Veterinarians can register to participate at http://www.saveacat.org/the-feral-fix.html and commit to providing free or low cost spay / neuter services to as many free-range cats as possible for their individual. practices.

Individuals are also encouraged to visit this page to ask Alley Cat Rescue to send their veterinarian an invitation to participate, or for a sample invitation if they would prefer to invite their veterinarian personally.

Alley Cat Rescue is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of all cats: domestic, stray, abandoned and wild. The ACR advocates humane, non-lethal control of feral cats. For more information, visit their website http://www.saveacat.org.

Axie is a Pokémon-like game that has its own virtual economy via in-game tokens – Smooth Love Potion (SLP) and Axie Infinity Shard (AXS). Like all in-game currencies, these can be used to buy land, farm, or breed Axies.

Axies are in-game creatures that players can breed, acquire, train, use to challenge, and battle online Pokémon similar to Neopets.Infinite Axes

Shark Tank’s renowned American billionaire Mark Cuban is one of the many investors backing the blockchain games company.

What is Axie Infinity and how do you play?

To get started, players need to buy or borrow at least three Axies. Axies are monsters that can be used to fight other players or teams, much like Pokémon. Or they can choose Arena mode, where players fight with different users on the platform with their Axies.

As with other cryptocurrencies, Axies prices are very volatile and fluctuate due to several factors. The value of an Axie depends on its abilities such as body parts, stats, and abilities.

An expensive or powerful Axie at the start of the game helps in the long run as it allows the player to establish supremacy earlier. These Axies can be purchased through crypto exchanges such as Binance, Huobi, and Kraken.

The most expensive Axie of all time, a triple mystic called Angel, sold for 300 Ether (ETH) in late 2020. The deal was worth $ 130,000 at the time.

‘Mystic’ Axes are worth more than normal Axes.Infinite Axes

Players can also get started for free by borrowing Axies from lenders, technically called “managers” in the game. While these managers are willing to lend their Axies, they are also entitled to take a share of the player’s earnings. This creates a passive source of income for them. The in-game token, AXS, is used to give investors a vote in the governance of the gaming ecosystem, while SLP is used to create new Axies.

However, unlike most games, in-game money can be converted into other cryptocurrencies, making them valuable in the outside world for transactions.

It’s a unique game-to-win model that relies entirely on the Ethereum blockchain, and many have used it to generate consistent income. Over the past 30 days, the game has generated nearly $ 780 million in sales across 1.4 million transactions. If that wasn’t enough, the developer announced on Twitter that he had reaches 1 million daily active users (DAU) on August 6.

However, experts warn that gambling is not inherently designed as an investment tool. The recent popularity of the game has driven up the value of tokens and collectibles in the game. It’s viral in some markets such as the Philippines and Vietnam, and top players are said to have made 1,500 SLP ($ 435) per day on their Axies.

Even though there are many more games of this type available today, and Axie Infinity has had the edge over the past three years because of its brewing community.

The play to win genre is just beginning

While Axie Infinity has dominated the headlines due to its age, there are plenty of other games available. Since most are relatively newer, they are still in their infancy and the opportunities for growth are plentiful.

NFT Axie Infinity Game Records Highest Billion-Dollar Trade Ever With Its Crypto-Based Virtual Economy
Axie # 3492 sold for 175 ETH on July 11 – valued at $ 365.00 at the time.Infinite Axes

CryptoKitties is an example where players can buy, breed, and trade digital chats through the Ethereum blockchain. A Dragon cat name sold for an insane price of 600 ETH, which equates to around $ 170,000.

Likewise, there is a Minecraft-like game called The Sandbox, where users can create new things and trade them with other players. The game is backed by its own motto called SAND, and the game has become a great place to share ideas, interact and engage.

Axie Infinity still has a host of challenges to overcome though

With all the fame and sudden influx of users, cracks in the core of the game are now seen quite frequently. Over the past few weeks, Axie’s server has experienced several downtime. Due to errors and disconnections, players have been forced to stay away from the game. And this is a serious problem since many players actively view the game as a source of income.

Since it is based on a decentralized configuration, developer commits are essential to keep it operational. Higher development activity means more engineers are working on solving network related activities. The value would often drop to zero for a few days, which means errors and disconnections will continue to increase if more support is not available soon. Many are also concerned that the “managerial” loan system will backfire, as lenders become too powerful by relying on new users, indirectly hampering the distribution of wealth in the game.

As the popularity of metaverse games and NFTs has grown, so has the interest and growth in blockchain-based game projects. Axie Infinity and more are just stepping stones being experimented with right now. While a plethora of mainstream companies and sports teams have embraced NFTs for collectibles, the gaming industry is just beginning and will need its own time to organically mature and develop. Cryptocurrencies are already in a gray area from a regulatory standpoint, and games like Axie Infinity are not yet directly available on US-based crypto exchanges.

There’s good news… and bad news: Bat breaks record as he travels 1,200 miles from London to Russia – only to end up being eaten by a cat

  • Nathusius’ pipistrelle traveled 1,254 kilometers from London to western Russia
  • She received a unique identification ring in 2016 at Bedfont Lakes Country Park
  • Bat was found by Russian animal rescue group on July 30 after cat attack

A bat broke British records traveling more than 1,200 miles from London to Russia – then met a tragic end after being eaten by a cat.

Nathusius’s pipistrelle, which traveled 1,254 kilometers from London to western Russia, weighed a third of an ounce (8 g) and was the size of a human thumb when it left.

The bat, which was discovered in the small Russian village of Molgino, was initially given a unique identification ring in 2016 at Bedfont Lakes Country Park near Heathrow.

The bat was found by a Russian animal rescue group on July 30 after being injured by a cat

Its journey marks one of the longest migrations on record from the UK and is possibly one of the longest bat migrations ever undertaken in the world.

The bat was found by a Russian animal rescue group on July 30 after being injured by a cat.

She passed away shortly after. The group only discovered their record-breaking trip after finding a ring with “London Zoo” written on it.

Lisa Worledge, head of conservation services at the Bat Conservation Trust, said: “This is a remarkable and longest journey that we have ever seen of any bats in Britain across Europe. Projects initiated by citizen scientists have helped shed light on the migration pattern of these winged wonders.

She added, “Thanks to the hard work of volunteers and dedicated researchers, we are starting to understand the needs of this species and how to conserve them.”

Little is known about the migration patterns of Nathusius’ pipistrelle bats. Some are thought to migrate to Britain from Eastern or Western Europe for the winter.

The record for this bat is only surpassed by another in Europe – a Nathusius’ pipistrelle which migrated from Latvia to Spain in 2017 – a record of 1,382 miles.

The British bat was originally tagged in 2016 by bat logger Brian Briggs.

He said: “It’s very exciting. It’s great to be able to contribute to international conservation work to protect these amazing animals and learn more about their fascinating lives.

Experts in Russia and the UK are working together to better understand this remarkably long journey.

Nathusius' pipistrelle made the 1,254 mile journey from London to western Russia

Nathusius’ pipistrelle made the 1,254 mile journey from London to western Russia

The range expansion of Nathusius’s Pipistrelle is linked to climate change, with future temperature changes expected to further affect the species. More data is essential to fully understand what the effects will be on these animals.

More than 2,600 Nathusius’s pipistrelles have been recorded in the UK since the launch of a national project in 2014. It aims to shed light on their reproductive, distribution and migration behaviors.

Colonies of the bat species are known in Kent, Northumberland, Surrey and Greater London.

Cave lions, or panthera spelaea, once lived across much of Eurasia before it died out around 10,000 years ago.

These Ice Age big cats, although closely related, were larger than their African lion parents that still exist today.

The two cave lion cubs are believed to have been around a month or two when they died – already about the size of an adult house cat – but carbon dating has shown they were mummified, presumably in mud, at roughly the same place. years apart.

Boris, the least intact cub, is estimated to be around 43,448 years old and Sparta, the most intact cub at 27,962 years, according to the study published in the journal Quatenary.

The Center for Paleogenetics at Stockholm University, which is the university residence of Love Dalén, a member of the research team, tweeted that Sparta “is undoubtedly the best preserved #ice Age animal never found! “

Cave lions and early humans coexisted.

The Chauvet Cave in France, whose discovery in 1994 upset the chronology of human artistic achievements, features a wall covered with images of cave lions, with different color patterns from those of African lions today.

The researchers note that the French cave contains “half of all Paleolithic cave lion paintings known to date”.

Cave lions had less pronounced manes, and the difference in color between juveniles and adults gave researchers a glimpse of how the animal’s fur pattern might have changed from youth to age. adult.

“It is still not clear exactly how cave lions adapted to living in the harsh conditions of high latitudes with their rapid seasonal periodicity, strong winds and cold, long winters with associated continuous nights,” wrote the researchers.

The document says there are clues, concluding that the cubs’ fur was similar but not identical to that of the African lion in existence today.

“Cave lion fur also has a long, thick fur undercoat made up of airy strombuliform fur hairs. It evenly covers the body of a cave lion cub and has most likely helped cave lion cubs adapt. in the cold climate “

Boris and Sparta have been found along the Senyalyakh River in the Yakutia region of Siberia, Russia.

Researchers could not say for sure how they died, as many cubs die young from various threats, but found that “cave lion cubs’ predatory death seems unlikely.”

Scientists conclude that the large number of well-preserved cave lion cubs found in this region of Russia “suggests that this area during the Karginian interstade (when the climate became relatively warm and tree vegetation expanded) was a site of favorable reproduction for the Lions cave. “

“It also seems likely that this site, during this period, exhibited some characteristics that made it more likely to freeze and preserve animals quickly. The site attracted cave lions to make dens, but it was probably also susceptible. to see them collapse. “

During the coronavirus outbreak, there have been numerous reports of infected pets and zoo animals, from a dog in Hong Kong in February 2020 – which initially baffled scientists – to two tigers from Sumatra currently recovering in the Jakarta Zoo amid the current wave of Indonesia.

Denmark also slaughtered millions of mink last year after finding a variant of the coronavirus in farmed populations that showed disturbing mutations.

The article suggests that animals in shelters are another high-risk population, due to their susceptibility to infection in a very stressful and cramped environment.

Researchers report an outbreak of H7N2 avian influenza in 2017 at cat shelters in New York City, which infected 300 animals – the first known example of the virus in cats – and spread to humans, as an example of their thesis.

Dr Bowsher said the veterinary and medical communities need to work together to detect potential zoonotic events earlier.

“Because we don’t measure, we just don’t know,” she told the Telegraph. “But it’s literally a breeding ground for viruses – and if we only look at humans, we’ll never get over this problem.”

She admitted that setting up a surveillance system would be complex and pose difficult questions for governments about restrictions if pathogens with potential to spill over were identified.

However, other experts said the chances of pets infecting humans with new viruses remained low.

Professor Jonathan Ball, a virologist at the University of Nottingham, who was not involved in the article, said: Exotic animals and other domestic animals are inferior to wildlife.

He said it was possible that spillover events occurred when humans first domesticated animals, pointing to a theory that domestication of cows could have caused measles in humans.

“But we have been living near these animals for a long time and so any likely overflow would have already occurred,” he added. “That’s not to say that it can’t happen, especially if the domestic animals themselves are infected from elsewhere, to act as an intermediate species.

“But the next spillover event is much more likely to occur, directly or indirectly, from an infection circulating in wildlife, especially rodents and bats.”

Dr Bowsher agreed this was the case, but said pressures on the environment across the world, including countries like the UK, meant these animals were increasingly susceptible to ” be in contact with humans and domestic animals.

“[For example], if a normally happy and undisturbed British bat is disturbed by a housing development, it is more likely to come into contact with other species which may consist of more wild or domesticated animals such than dogs or even humans, ”she said.

“It was these new contacts that triggered new pathogen transmission routes that we poorly monitor – so if a European bat lyssavirus (a causative agent of rabies) starts circulating in new species, we can take some time to catch up. ”

She said the key was to improve surveillance networks because of the role pets could play, even in the next pandemic.

“There’s a good chance the next thing will come from a bat, camel, or monkey – but the next pandemic could either seriously harm your dog, or the dog could even amplify the next pandemic. a way we don’t know about and which needs to be considered and evaluated, ”she said.

The pine marten, a species previously thought to have survived only largely in the North, established a population in the New Forest in Hampshire.

The animals, which are a cat-sized member of the weasel family, have been captured by hidden cameras set up to monitor other species.

Habitat loss and human activity have drastically reduced their numbers, leaving only a small, fragmented population, mainly in northern England, Scotland and parts of Wales.

They prefer well-forested areas with lots of cover and largely feed on small rodents, birds, insects and fruit.

Leanne Sargeant, Senior Ecologist at Forestry England, said: “It’s not often that we are able to talk about the return of wildlife to landscapes and the recovery of their populations, so it’s a really fascinating development to see. to study.

“The New Forest is a unique landscape and refuge for wildlife, and through this work we hope to learn what makes it such a good habitat for returning pine martens.”

A team from Forestry England, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Wild New Forest will be studying them over the next year to learn more about how these rare creatures live in the forest.

Marcus Ward, of the conservation consultancy firm Wild New Forest, said: “Since we recorded the first video evidence of pine martens in the New Forest in 2016, we have been following their progress with great interest.

“This new project is a wonderful opportunity to assess the current state of the New Forest population and will help inform their future conservation.

The team will assess the size of the population and its reproductive success. Each pine marten is brown in color, but each has a uniquely shaped bib – a section of pale yellow fur on the chin and throat.

This will identify and record each individual, and observing their interactions will allow the team to spot family groups as well.

KENNEWICK, Wash. (KAPP-KVEW) This Saturday, PetSmart in Kennewick has its first adoption event since February 2020. Organizers expect around 100 dogs and cats from seven local adoption partners and rescues to be available for adoption.

For the safety of the public and animals, the event will take place indoors. In addition to adorable cats and dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds, they will also have food vendors including Gourmet Doggystyle and Kona ice cream. The event will also host resources and experts will be on hand to answer any questions you may have to prepare you to bring your furry family home.

“The problem adoption agencies have now is that they are inundated with pets that were adopted during the COVID-19 quarantine. People weren’t thinking very well about the process and now they’re giving up and giving up on pets, ”said Tammy Falkner, store manager for PetSmart.

Fees and adoption protocols vary by agency, and all pets are fully vaccinated, spayed, and neutered. “Adoption is a process, and they ask all the right questions to make sure you get a pet that fits your lifestyle for a lifelong relationship with that pet,” Falkner said.

Each person who adopts receives a free 30-minute private lesson from PetSmart, free food, an adoption book, and discounts at the grooming salon, Falkner said.

If you want to see if your current pets are getting along with a new furry friend, there is an outside meet and greet area in the shade that PetSmart offers.
